POWERHOUSE, C. 1988. To supply the additional electricity required by the expansion of the trolley line through Collegeville and Trappe, the Schuylkill Valley Traction Company erected a large brick powerhouse in 1901. Located at 45 First Avenue, the powerhouse had coal-fired generators that were used to supply electricity until 1918. It was then used by W.H. Gristock & Sons to store lumber, until it was purchased by Jacob Ervin “Erv” Shainline in 1970 and became a Sunday market for selling antiques and collectibles. Shainline’s daughters now operate the business. (Courtesy of the Historical Society of Trappe, Collegeville, Perkiomen Valley.)
